Understanding CIDR (Classless Inter-Domain Routing)

What is CIDR?

CIDR (Classless Inter-Domain Routing) is a method for allocating IP addresses and managing IP routing more efficiently. It replaces the old classful IP addressing system (Class A, B, C) and allows for flexible subnetting.

  • CIDR Notation: Written as IP address/prefix length, e.g., 192.168.1.0/24.
    • 192.168.1.0 → IP Address
    • /24Prefix length indicating how many bits are used for the network portion.
