BGP (Border Gateway Protocol)

What is BGP?

BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) is the “postal service” of the internet.
It’s the protocol that decides the best path for data to travel between different networks, known as Autonomous Systems (AS).

  • Autonomous System (AS): A large network or group of networks under one organization’s control, like an ISP or a big company.
  • BGP’s Job: Help these ASes communicate with each other efficiently.

BGP is often called a Path Vector Protocol because it selects routes based on path information.
